In this picture the road seems to act like a moat, keeping the people at a distance from the Bank. The railings either side of the road or 'moat' act as extra reinforcement. The big issue seller represents lack of money on one side of the moat, his only defence being his coat, hat and magazine. On the other side of the moat, the Bank of England has impenetrable walls, iron doors and grilles to defend itself and its money.
