The Gunners

The cannons are semiotically very powerful. They are not only the Arsenal football teams's symbol, they are also the sign of war, power and defence. The cannons are not only decorative, they also act as an actual barrier stopping any vehicles from getting through.

A view from the corner of the 'castle'

The bank has a strong visual likeness to a castle. The huge wall bending round each corner gives the impression of a powerful defence. The greek style columns create a deeper illusion of protection. From this distance the surrounding area seems to be charged with the grandeur of the bank.

In this picture the road seems to act like a moat, keeping the people at a distance from the Bank. The railings either side of the road or 'moat' act as extra reinforcement. The big issue seller represents lack of money on one side of the moat, his only defence being his coat, hat and magazine. On the other side of the moat, the Bank of England has impenetrable walls, iron doors and grilles to defend itself and its money.

The Bank Of England

This is simply an enormous wall. The people walking past put the size of the wall into context and the railings add to the theme of defence. A very simple way of defence yet hugely effective.

The Bank Of England

The huge iron door is in itself a great way of defending. The doors inside the door create a 'layer' effect and show the intense levels of security. Altough the composition isn't the best, the photo still manages to capture the essence of the bank of Englands defence system.
